One of the critical systems in the breast is the lymphatic system. To appreciate its importance, it helps to understand the basic anatomy and function of the breast.
The functional tissue, the mammary glands, which produces and delivers milk to the infant, is organized in clusters (lobes), which are connected with ducts. The supporting framework is provided by bands of thickened fascia strands. The mammary glands and ducts are surrounded by connective tissue and fat for support and protection. The breast contains no muscle but it has its blood supply and venous drainage.
Technique
The purpose of the treatment is to enhance the flow of the lymph fluid. The lymph in the breast flows in a very specific pattern. The manual lymphatic drainage follows that pattern to clear the congestion from the tissue.
The lymphatic system clears the fluid from the intercellular tissue. Chronic congestion in the breast tissue and the retro-mammary space is often the main factor in various health conditions, including breast cancer.
Breast tissue changes as women age. The mammary glands are slowly replaced by dense collagen fibre and eventually by fat. Denser tissue might impair the lymph flow, causing general soreness or local tenderness.
Note –> Dense tissue often makes detection of breast cancer difficult. The collapse of lobules might result in micro-cysts. Compression by tight clothing further adds to the problems with blood and lymph circulation.
Underwire bras are known to be a cause of restriction of lymph flow in the breast. It is suggested women who had breast cancer not wear underwire bras.
Treatment can relieve
- Congestion and swelling
- Premenstrual tenderness
- Helps mobilize post-surgical scarring
- Discomfort following cancer treatment
Breast pain and discomfort are very closely related to estrogens dominance and other hormonal issues, menopause and diet.
